Wireless keyboard won't connect

This didn’t work for me cause I have a password, so when I restart my system it shows me the password space for me to type in my password.

Without the keyboard how do I do that?

Please I need help with this ASAP, anyone please.

What if you can’t log in to your mac because there’s password,and you can’t do anything because your wireless keyboard just won’t connect?

Thank you for the instructions, but what do you do if this keeps happening? Can't constantly redo the pairing. My keyboard is blinking -- I have paired and repaired it many times, but this problem keeps coming back. The batteries are fine, restart the computer: done; turn bluetooth off and then on again: done; don't release button on keyboard until you get response: done... nothing seems to work, and it can't be normal to have to constantly go through the pairing process again. Any thoughts?

I have a update when you try to pair a Apple Keyboard (2011) with a MacBook (Early 2016) - Before step 4 you should release the power button on the keyboard and the repress as you click pair in the settings window. If you keep pressing from step 4 to 5 it will not pair.

None of this worked for me. I have an iMac, OSX 10.11.6. All was working until I did a Security Update 2017-004. Had to restart and neither wireless mouse or keyboard worked. Mouse just needed me to reconnect and worked. But keyboard will not connect or even be recognized now. Multiple restarts, checking batteries, checking Bluetooth preferences. Keyboard was showing up on bluetooth preference but not now. Even keyboard system preference does not show keyboard. Did the SMC reset too.

Keyboard works on another mac so doubt it is battery or keyboard problem, and more to do with the Security Update.

Problem solved. I had set my wireless keyboard to the side since it was not syncing and was using my wired keyboard. Well today I laid a book on the wireless keyboard by mistake and after awhile I got the window to type in the 6 digit sync code. Now maybe it was just coincidence with my laying the book on it by mistake but right now it is working fine. Was without wireless keyboard for 2 days before this happened.

The few times this has happened to my, I have a "junk" drawer which, among other mice, trackpads and keyboards has three old USB Apple keyboards. I just plug in an old keyboard to enter the password and continue.

(Apple wired keyboards are available all over eBay starting at about $18. )

Here's a trick I might not have posted here. It works without a battery swap. It has worked, without fail, every time for me during the last six re-pairings.

I use Photoshop occasionally and if I don’t close everything else down, after about 15 minutes, the Bluetooth keyboard just goes on a lunch break and doesn’t return. It’s quick and 100% effective for me.

1. Preferences -> Bluetooth ->Advanced -> <b>uncheck</b> the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer
2. Restart computer
3. Preferences -> Bluetooth ->Advanced -> <b>check</b> the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer
4. Restart the computer

Hats off to you. Thanks for this (the kicker for me was holding down the power button on the keyboard while trying to pair it). Oddly, this happened to me while I had batteries in the keyboard still with power. Nevertheless, it's worked like a charm. Thanks for sharing your experience.

what do you do if your computer is password protected and you can't login to access system preferences? I can't get past the login screen and the notification that computer is searching for the keyboard. My wireless mouse connects without any issue.

I tried this, but it won't work. When I turn on my computer, I get a Bluetooth Keyboard Setup window that says that no keyboard is found and I should check my settings. I can't close this window and the second I hover my mouse over it, I get the beach ball. The only way to get out of it, is to click and hold on the app icon at the dock, to get the pop up that says "Application Not Responding" and Force Quit it.

I can't even Turn Bluetooth Off. I click it and nothing happens. I open preferences, uncheck the "On" button, close it and open it again, it's check that it's "On" still. If I uncheck "Discoverable" I get the beach ball and have to Force Quit Preferences. If I try to delete the wireless keyboard, nothing happens. It gives me the warning when I click the "-" button, and when I click ok, nothing happens.

The keyboard stays unconnected. The wireless mouse (I never use because I have a Wacom Tablet) will connect when I flick the switch, but doesn't work when I move it around.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Of course I have a huge project due at the end of the week and this happens.

Updating to Mavericks has changed the process for me, and left me still not able to connect the bluetooth keyboard.

Here are the steps I've taken:

1. Go to System Preferences -> Bluetooth. Delete the keyboard from the list of devices by clicking the X beside the keyboard.
2. Take the batteries out of the keyboard and reinsert them - don't power on the keyboard yet. This puts the keyboard in discovery mode the next time it's switched on.
3. Bluetooth Preferences does not show a '+' button to add a new device. Go to SystemPreferences > Keyboard > Setup Bluetooth Keyboard.
4. When the Bluetooth Setup Assistant is displayed hold down the power button on the keyboard and don't release it! The keyboard should now appear in the list of devices.
5. Press 'Continue' - remember to keep pressing the keyboard power button while hitting 'Continue'. You should get an 8 digit passcode from the setup assistant.

Keyboard appears, I press 'Continue' while still holding the keyboard power button down, and I never get a passcode. The assistant gives me the message:

The pairing attempt was unsuccessful. Click "Continue" to try again.

My bluetooth mouse is connected and stays connected. The next thing I'll try is to delete the plist file and see if that helps.

Any other ideas??

Wow, thanks. I've been struggling with this for 6 months. When I went to the Apple Store a genius said my preferences were corupted so I needed to create a new user and move all of my data to the new account. Glad I found your post first. 🙂

Deleting the plist file didn't fix the issue. What it did change was that the keyboard setup assistant was recognizing the keyboard as "Raylene's Keyboard" before deleting the plist, and now it just says, "1 keyboard found".

I restarted my macbook pro and restarted the whole process. But to no avail. So... I'm hoping I can figure out a solution soon. I'll let you know if I find any new info.
