volume not working

hello, i have no volume at all. tried restarting, checked system preferences and the volume slider bar is grayed out. also, when trying to adjust volume from thr f keys, the level will not change and there is a circle with slash through it (like a do not enter symbol, do not know what proper name of symbol) underneath the volume level.
