itunes doesn't recognize my ipod nano

I have an I-Pod Nano. I'm pretty sure it's generation 4, maybe 5. It doesn't have a camera, I know that. The device keeps shutting off. Windows hardly ever recognizes it. I-tunes never does. Can anyone help? I want to reload the software onto it, but don't know how! If you could help, I would greatly appreciate it.
