Q: Photostream uploads automaticaly

Hi everybody..

So here's the thing. Somehow I just don't understand this whole Photostream feature. I installed iPhoto and imported my 10k+ pictures which I also sync to my iPhone through iTunes. Now all I want is to have new pictures I make with iPhone be downloaded to iPhoto, which is, as I understood the main function of Photostream. But when I enable Photostream in iPhoto, it starts to upload all my pictures to Photostream even though 'Automatic upload' is disabled! Obviously, I don't want to do that (only 1000 pics can go to the stream and also I don't want to solve some troubles regarding violation of rules for content whatever). When I enable Photostream on the iPhone, same thing happenes: It uploads 1000 pictures from the library and stops. And doesn't offer deleting all pictures at once. It also doesn't display the stream I see in the iPhoto. What should I do to use Photostream to automatically upload new pictures from camera roll to my iPhoto library?

I do not understand yoru problem - you must have some setting incorrect - read the instructions for set up - http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/ - and the faqs - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US -  and see if you see it

Well, there is not much to do wrong, is it? Screen Shot 2013-05-28 at 9.50.17 PM.png

    1) My photos starts to being uploaded as soon as I turn on My Photo Stream even though both Automatic Import (which is for download I guess) and Automatic Upload (which should control this particular behavior) are disabled. So, something is wrong and that's why I opened this topic.

    2) The other part is how to make iPhone upload ONLY camera roll, not all pictures in the phone.

From one of the links I posted

When do photos upload to My Photo Stream?

When you enable My Photo Stream on your devices, all new photos you take or import to those devices will be automatically added to your photo stream.

On an iOS device, new photos you take will be automatically uploaded to your photo stream when you leave the Camera app and are connected to Wi-Fi. Note: My Photo Stream does not push photos over cellular connections.

On your Mac, any new photos you import to iPhoto or Aperture will begin uploading automatically when you have a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. Or, you can change your iPhoto or Aperture preferences so that only photos you manually add to My Photo Stream are uploaded.

On a PC with iCloud Control Panel 2.0 or later, open a Windows Explorer window. Select Photo Stream under Favorites. Open My Photo Stream. Click the "Add photos" button. Select photos to import to My Photo Stream, and then click Open.

If everything is set according to the articles I posted and if you do not have some strange software doing some strange thing that is it

No one else has posted that PS is not following the standard rules

Well, no, I don't have anything unusual installed. I use iCloud since begining and everything always worked well and logically. Now I wanted iPhoto (exactly because of Photo Stream) and it behaves weird. All my pictures are immediately sucked into iCloud, and I am asking why?

In all paragraphs it clearly says NEW photos. I understand it as all pictures taken or imported AFTER turning Photo Stream on. Is that how it is supposed to work?

When you turn on your PhotoStream on a device, it will be initialized on that device by downloading what is currently stored in the iCloud - max. 1 month or 1000 photos.

In all paragraphs it clearly says NEW photos.

That "new" refers to uploading from a device. New photos will be added to iCloud, when you enable automatic upload.

To fix the unwanted uploads, I'd disconect your mac from the internet and then delete all photos from the photostream on your mac, that you do not want to upload. see:  How to delete photos from Photo Stream

    Only then go online again.

OK guys, I don't know if you don't understand me or I don't understand you. Let's break it down to single steps. I have all Photo streams off and take my iPhone. It contains 10.000 pictures (synced with iTunes). I want to turn Photo stream on the iPhone on and put ONLY Camera roll there (only 1000 random pictures would be uploaded anyway, no point in pushing there all). Is that possible?

    Ren,

we understood you. Only I at least are really puzzled by what you are reporting is happening on you device.

Your iPhone will only share photos added to the camera roll to the photo stream, and only new photos.

What you currently have in your camera roll will not be added to the photo stream.

The photos synced with iTunes will not appear in the photo stream, unless you save them to the camera roll.

To read your current camera roll from your phone connect it to your mac via usb and download it directly.

Yes, this is what I was hoping for. Hmm, I have an idea. Is there a way how to check what is currently uploaded to Photo stream? I didn't notice such option on icloud.com. Or at least to somehow delete everything what is there?

You can delete what your mac is syncing with the Photo Stream by erasing caches in the System library, but that is rather drastic. The set of photos that your mac is currently syncing with iCloud is stored in the System Library in the  folder  ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets

and in the caches of the photostream-agent.

Sounds as a solid lead, thanks! But before hitting iPhoto so hard...Maybe I completelly missed something. I have Photo stream switched off. When I turn it on in iPhoto preferences, 'My Photo Stream' appears in the Web section of iPhoto and slowly starts filling with pictures. I interpreted it whole time as pictures being uploaded to iCloud but isn't it the other way around? Aren't they maybe downloaded FROM iCloud TO iPhoto? That would mean I have all these pictures in the iCloud already!

That's why I asked if I can somehow check what is currently in PS section of iCloud (I know it doesn't count against quota so I need a different way).

I did a few more tries and I can say, it's pretty odd. I let iPhoto to put 1000 pictures into My PS. It was indeed DOWNLOADING from PS. After 1000 it stopped. I deleted all of them. Waited. Another 1000. Deleted. Repeat 10 times. Now it seems there are no pictures in iCloud, cool. And my account was not deleted because of a bit of naked skin which surely appears on some pic. So, now I take my iPhone, hoping it's all solved, turn on PS and magically, 680 pictures are downloaded. Where are these pictures coming from???? Why can't we check what is really uploaded on icloud.com?
