Delay in response from phone

When I attempt to open apps, emails or even put the phone to sleep, there is long delay in the phones response. Sometimes several minutes before it will do what I've asked it to do. What it causing this delay? I am vigilant about updating the phones software and apps. It has not been damaged or dropped. I have 11.7GB used with 1.8GB available.
