I can't boot my MacBook Pro , all I get is a flashing folder with a question mark. I can insert a install disk but when I get to the install, I get a message saying I need to restart the computer. Is my hard disk drive bad? Any help would be appreciated.

I've written it to explain the issue and go about fixing it or determing if you require more effort.
Best I can see, hard drive has failed! None of the above solutions resolved my problem.
It will have to be replaced then.

The old drive might still work to get at your data, it might be a bad cable
