Windows won't minimize

Hi, I've been having a weird problem with my MacBook Pro. Sometimes, windows won't minimize (either the button is ghosted or clicking on it does nothing-both seem to happen at random) I can't re-create the problem, so taking it in to the Genius Bar doesn't help much. I have all the updates installed, but it still happens. The only thing that seems to fix it is closing the application or restarting. Has anyone else experienced this on their MacBook?

Well, I'm pretty sure (don't know exactly when it started, like I said, it's random)it was doing this when I first started using it, before I even had a chance to load anything. Any specific software conflicts that you know of? Also, it seems to happen mostly to Safari and Finder windows, after long periods of use. Sometimes, it will start in Safari and then creep to other windows, like open folder windows. For example, I'll be using Safari, but when I try to minimize it, the button is either grayed out or won't work, then I'll restore another window from the Dashboard, and then that window will have minimizing problems. It's pretty eerie/frustrating when it starts to "infect" other open windows. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Hi again, Jessica.

Unfortunately, it turns out my memory is incorrect. I know of people who have had the same problem, but not who have a complete solution.

I would try two things just to make sure you have done what you can: (1) Niel's suggestion about changing the color depth to see if that clears anything up ( you could toggle it back and forth) and (2) uninstalling Synergy just to rule it out as a possible cause. The other applications you mention don't sound like likely culprits. (On the other hand, if you installed any system hacks in the past and they didn't get fully uninstalled, there's a possibility there as well.)

One of our other Level 4 forum members said he had this problem and it lasted some time and then cleared up mysteriously on its own, perhaps due to a system update, perhaps something else. While he had the issue, it was usually cleared up by quitting the program that was an issue at the moment or by restarting the Mac.

Sorry I can't offer much more advice. It seems to be one of those mysterious problems that people run across sometimes. :-\

This doesn't seem to fix my problem. I set the number of colors at thousands, and after Safari crashed 2x in a row, both my open Finder windows had the "ghosted minimize bug". Could this possibly be a Safari problem? Thanks for your input everyone, I'm going to submit a bug report in Safari, but if anyone has anything else to suggest, I'll leave this topic open.

*Relaunching the Finder (hold option, ctrl/right click on Finder icon in dashboard) does solve this problem-kind of a pain to have to do it whenever this happens, hopefully they will release a patch soon.

In the Displays pane of System Preferences, change the monitor's bitdepth to Millions and see if the minimize button reactivates; if not, open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:

tell application "Finder"
quit
end tell
delay 2
tell application "Finder"
run
end tell

The AppleScript can also be dragged into the Finder's toolbar if it is saved as an application to place the control in a convenient place.
