I created a wi-fi network and now want to delete it. I did the usual - system preferences>network>advanced>choose network>click "-" to delete. The network is no longer listed in my network preferences, but the wi-fi connection is still running. Can anyone tell me how to properly delete the network? Thanks.

Connect to another network, then delete the network. Then do a Safe Restart which will reset some caches. Your system will still see the wi-fi network but should not connect to it if you have already chosen another.
Thanks for the idea... I did what you suggested and the result is as you explained. However, the problem is that I'm afraid someone is using my Internet connection to upload (my bill for uploading is and download huge files, so I've created a new wi-fi network and want to delete the old one so that it is no longer available. Is this not possible?
what do you mean by click "-" ?
under the listbox listing the wifi networks there are 2 buttons one with + and one with - on it
you get there by clicking on the wifi icon in the top menu and choosing open network preferences
and then clicking advanced button in that dialog
