Q: My Iphone 4s won't connect to my IMac's wifi.

My Iphone 4s won't connect to my IMac's wifi. It used to connect with no problem once I set up my IMac as a wifi hotspot but has suddenly stopped connecting. It never provides an error message it just continously tries to connect while that little whell spins away indicating no progress but still trying. I've tried resetting the phone and the network. I've tried changing the name and password of the wifi network. My phone does connect to wifi at work with no problem. Any suggestions? Could it be the IMac?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

    Howdy scovig,

I was thinking the easiest place to start troubleshooting is the phone, and I recommend this article named iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398.

    I would start here:

    Basic troubleshooting

    • Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and then on again.
    • Verify that you are in range of your Wi-Fi router or base station.
    • Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and Cable/DSL modem are connected to power and turned on.
    • Check whether other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
    • Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware.
      • For AirPort Base Stations, refer to this article for information about firmware updates. For third-party Wi-Fi routers, check the manufacturer's website for details on updating your firmware.
    • Restart your iOS device
      • Hold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.

IF that doesnt cut the mustard, then I recommend this section toward the bottom:

If you're unable to join a nearby Wi-Fi network

    • Try restarting your Wi-Fi router by turning it off and then on again.
      • Note: If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
    • When joining an 802.11n Wi-Fi network, ensure that your router is properly configured. See this article for more information.
    • Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
      • Note: This will reset all network settings, including passwords, VPN, and APN settings.

    All the best,

    Sterling

Thank you Sterling for the advice. I am no computer genius but I am using my IMac as a wireless router as illustrated here http://www.macinstruct.com/node/118 That being the case I don't think that I can reset the router but as I stated, I am a computer idiot. Also when I go to Network withing the System Preferences I see this note when I check my wifi "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.78.145 and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Not sure where to go from here.
