My screen is displaying too large. What did I do wrong?

I think the arm of my chair pushed the Control key, but what else I did I don't know. My screen display is too big and way stretched horizontally. I've adjusted my screen resolution to several settings, but can't get back to a normal sized display. This is really irritating as well as limiting. Please help. Thanks.

Okay, here's the solution. I needed to use the controls on my monitor, but since not many folks probably have the same BenQ monitor I won't go into that. I also needed to reset the resolution by going to the system preferences, selecting Display, and then selecting 1680 x 1050. Actually, 1920 x 1200 is recommended, but it makes everything too small for me to read comfortably, so I chose a more readable resolution. Anyway, all is back to when was it was. Thanks to all who tried to help.

Did you try to zoom out holding the CONTROL key and using your scroll function on your mouse before you unchecked the mouse setting in syst prefs> The screen will stay at the last zoom when that is unchecked.

Try checking it again then try the control scroll mentioned above, if it restore to normal, then you can unclick the mouse setting to defeat it.

Your chair arm might have pressed the control while you were scrolling and that could have caused this.

If that does not work try a nvpram and smc reset.
