does anyone know when this ability will come back? I remember with iOS 5 you could swipe your purchases and select "hide" on your iphone.
If this feature is not coming back, is there a workaround I can use?

On these forums we won't know whether it's likely to work again, all we know is what it says on the page that you posted from :
You currently cannot hide purchases on devices using iOS 6.
You should still be able to hide items via your computer's iTunes, and they should then be hidden from the Purchased tabs in the App Store, iTunes store, ibookstore on your phone.
Apple hasn't said, and for such issues almost never does. The feature, if it comes back, will probably just suddenly reappear without notice in a future update.
The only workaround right now is to hide the purchases through iTunes on your computer.
