Unable to safely remove my iPod Nano when finished charging

I get this message "unable to safely remove at this time" always, so the only way to remove it is to shut down my computer. Any suggestions please?

When iPod is connected to a computer there are times when it should not be disconnected by simply unplugging the USB cable. In these cases, iPod must first be ejected before it can be safely disconnected. Read the information in this article to determine when an iPod can be safely disconnected.
