Q: DSL Ethernet connection problem w/iMac
My DSL Ethernet connection (CenturyLink ISP) works great with my old 13" MacBook 1.1 but is superslow (circa 5 times slower) when I connect it to my new 27" iMac (latest MountainLion OS). The modem is the Westell 6100." A Century Link Rep verified the modem and Ethernet cable also works great with his PC Laptop. Something is amiss in the iMac software or firmware that is causing the painfully sluggish internet performance. I went through all the Power Modem down & wait raindances as well as unplugging all telephones in the house and basically the problem is pretty well isolated to the internal events going on inside the iMac that are not happening in the Snow Leopard MacBook 1.1. When I run in a WIFI configuration with the Ethernet Cable plugged into to my old Airport Extreme instead of directly into the iMac (or MacBook) then the iMac and iPad are both very slow whereas my MacBook & old G4 are not.

After checking the System Log and Activity Monitor I noticed that mdworker was consuming an inordinate amount of processor time and had a lot of denied "isboxed" access attempts. This condition is symptomatic of Spotlight indexing issues and can evidently be resolved by doing a Safe Mode Startup which I did and that seems to have solved the problem as the iMac Ethernet performance is just as fast as the MacBook's.
