Q: if you get the unreadable files warning, what do you do then?

recorded video as PSH AVCHD, and the videos failed to import into iphoto. got the unreadable files wanring.

tried importing into imovie with no success. "private" file shows as a "collection of ASVCHD files", not as a folder.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS19

Not all variants of AVCHD are supported by iPhoto. As a format is has many variants and very little standardisation.  For iMovie help I would ask on that forum.

this is primarily an iphoto isssue. I view and see all of my files in iphoto.

all videos originally imprted and played in iphoto, until I changed video settings to PSH AVCD from FSH AVCD.

the unreadable files are shown as the MTS files and others files:

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/PLAYLIST/00000.MPL

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/PLAYLIST/00001.MPL

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/CLIPINF/00000.CPI

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/CLIPINF/00001.CPI

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/CLIPINF/00002.CPI

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/CLIPINF/00003.CPI

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/CLIPINF/00004.CPI

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00001.MTS

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00002.MTS

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00003.MTS

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00004.MTS

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/INDEX.BDM

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/MOVIEOBJ.BDM

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/AVCHDTN/THUMB.TID

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/AVCHD/AVCHDTN/THUMB.TDT

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/FILEMNG.DAT

    /Volumes/MIGO LUMIX/PRIVATE/.LSOverride

but the video content on the camera shows a  (non-folder) called private. with no further breakdown. and does not recognise that anything further on the camera is available for download

Well the obvious thing is to change it back to FSH then, isn't it? After all, as I said above

Thanks. I have done that, and hopefully all will return to normal.

are my videos in PSH lost then in the sense that they will never be played by iphoto in my albums?

I'm sure that some software came with your camera that will process these and can export them to a supported format.

A note on AVCHD: This format was developed for people who are shooting to edit the material afterwards. If you're shooting to edit, then iMovie or Final Cut are the correct home for this material. If you're not shooting to edit consider using one of the other video formats on your Camera.

Terence, thanks for the information about AVCHD. I am a pretty basic user, and that is what the Lumix camera came with, oruginally worked well with iphoto, so...

there is a setting for video - mp4 - is thatr a better setting?

    thanks for your patient replies.

I think for most people shooting with their syill camera, yes, that is perfectly adequate. Really, unless you're going to be editing, I see little point in the extra work involved with AVCHD. But best for you: shoot a little at the mp4 setting, see if you're happy with what you get.
