Many thousands of iMac Intel owners have performed
the Firmware Update 1.0.1 without issue. It is to
YOUR advantage to have your machine up-to-date. Get
it over with, so that you know whether you finally
have gotten a good iMac. If not, it will just find
    another way to fail you.

What will you do next year if this firmware update is
a REQUIRED MINIMUM for installing Leopard? It is to
your advantage to do it now, before your machine
becomes mucked-up with third party devices and third
party software. Besides, without the firmware update
your warranty service will be compromised. Best of
luck to you, whatever you decide.

Well you might be right, if the Firmware would be bad, it wont work correctly on many other iMac (Core Duo), the Firmware isnt offered as beta to install for own risk, so it should work without Display flicker after sleep mode, if the iMac is ok.

Since firmware updates are such a rare occurrence, I doubt that Apple engineering is inclined to release firmware updates that are rushed out without sufficient testing and verification. Since there is no time pressure to issue a release, there's every reason to expect they have more pride in their workmanship than that, and do use some sort of beta testing, at least among the in-house Mac community.

Again, the important thing to remember is that a firmware update will only affect machines in service, as the new logic boards ordered and built from then on will be spec'd with the new firmware, and will not need to be updated. Considering that an order for new or updated logic boards may involve a substantial amount of money, woe is the engineering personnel responsible for that kind of mistake.

Apple has guidelines or recommendations for optimizing the download and install of all system updates. Unfortunately, many pay no attention. I realize that there are issues of importance that arise without any warning.

Yet, if one reads through many thousands of these forum posts, it should be somewhat surprising how many problems end up with the most simple of solutions or answers. The need for actual physical parts replacement or technically complex solutions actually appears to be very rare compared to either the number of complaints or to the number of Macs in service.

My iMac has also started having a flickering display. This is since I updated the SMC. Have not installed the Boot-Rom update since I don't want to install Windoze.

Intresting, did it flicker a short time after SMC Update, or a few days later?
Right now after 2hours of display sleep mode, does it look like on following photo, found on WWW:

    Hello Erik

I know meanwhile personally users with both Firmware Updates installed, without the flicker problem after wakeup from Display Sleep Mode.
There are also postings about it, long time before Apple released the current Firmware Updates.
It let me assume, it isnt a Firmware or ATI Driver bug. I think it was good that Apple offered me a new iMac as replacement, atleast a good chance to get an iMac without the flickering.
By the way, has yours a MATSHITA UJ-846 or a Pioneer drive build in?

I just purchased a refurbished imac 20" intel *my first mac* couple of days ago online and its due to arrive tomorrow (june 6). This talk about the flickering and lines on the display has me worried.
I was wondering if this problem is mostly occuring in Europe and or Austria for I have not seen any replies to the post from the U.S.

And if it is occuring in the states, should I be on the look out for this problem after my computer falls awakens from its first sleep mode?

    -Thanks

    Hello

Its Europe and Australia not Austria
Apart of the Keyboard Layout and 110V in the U.S and 220V in Europe, I think the Logic Boards with the onboard ATI Chip are the same in the U.S as in Europe.
Might be a good idea to test it with your purchased refurbished iMac. Install all Updates including the Firmware, if its done let the Display a few Minutes or a hour sleep and wake it up.

For the most german iMac User works it fine, I dont think many iMacs will have this error, so the chance to get an good working iMac is very big

    Hey Thorne^,

I'm sorry to say but I don't think this is a Firmware issue, as I've now had two iMacs with this problem.

The first one (which was actually my second iMac - the first died of a hard disk failure) I installed the SMC Update, and shortly after that (a day or two) the flickering began. I think you linked to one of my images from this post showing the filckering...

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=408150

I got my new iMac yesterday as Apple replaced the other one as DOA as it was within 14 days. Unfortunatly after 24 hours it's started to get the flickering as you can see in the photo below:

The one thing I've not done is install the SMC update this time, it's still waiting to be downloaded in the software update. Neither have I installed the Bootcamp Firmware. As much as I would like to think this can be fixed with Firmware I think this is a bigger problem, and hardware based.

It is without doubt now only related to screen sleep and not machine deep sleep. It also seems to be much more common (from the posts on this board) with the 256mb graphics card upgrades.

    Hello Andrew,

I agree with you, it seems the current Firmware Versions are not the reason for it.
But the 128MB Version of the iMac has the same Problem, the reason why we see more 20" with 256MB is - more people choosed the 256MB Vram iMac.
In the survey (i told you about it), voted meanwhile 46 people, 40 of them have no flickering issue, 33 of the ppl without the flickering issue installed the SMC 1.0 and the Boot-Rom Firmware 1.0.1. Many of them have the iMac since February 2006.
I'm aware this isnt a representatively result, but it lets me assume only a small portion of all 20" Intel iMacs have the flickering problem.

My replacement should arrive on Monday, of course i hope it will be one of the many error free iMacs

I just bought a brand-new imac last week and the flickering started yesterday. Does anyone actually know what to do about it? Is there a remedy other than returning the imac (which I'm afraid will be quite difficult in Poland)? This flickering is driving me mad - happens each time after the comp wakes up from the sleep mode and stops after a while. Help!

    Hi Pete,

I afraid your only option is to send it back to Apple. If it's within 14 days of purchase they will just give you a new machine, but otherwise it will have to go to a service centre for repair.

If you have to use it before you send it back, a way to 'minimize' the problem is to increase the time the computer waits to go to sleep and set the screen to fall asleep the same time as the whole computer. I will still flicker when waking up, but less often.

    Hope that helps

    Andrew,

many thanks for your response - that is actually what I did yesterday - increased that time. And frankly speaking that is all I can do - I know that. I'll call Apple and try to return it, but what works everywhere, not necessarily works here you see.

    Thanks,

Hi - I didn't have the issue installing the SMC update. I specifically tested this after I returned my first iMac because of a suspected hardware fault. The problem seems to have only started happening on the second machine after installing the 10.4.6 system update.

I thought I was doing the right thing by installing all the reported software updates, only to find that doing so caused the problem. Very frustrating...
