I'm new to Garageband (on iMac) and would like to know if I can download more drum kits without dowloading any drum loops?
The reason being, I want to program my own drum tracks, and I don't want thousands of loops I'll never use taking up memory.

There's more drum instruments in the Jam Packs. You can always discard any loops you don't like. (You'll have to trash them in the Finder and then re-index the Loop Library.)
