My screen saver is not functioning - it is set to activate after 2 minutes - it's been working for the 1.5 years I've had my 27" iMac (os x 10.8.3)... not sure why this would happen all of a sudden and more importantly how it can be fixed.... any suggestions?

Open up /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/, move the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist to the Desktop, restart, open up the Energy Saver prefPane in System Preferences, and see if that fixes the problem. If so, delete the moved file and press on.
Repairing permissions using Disk Utility has worked for some people.
If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
pmset -g assertions | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
