basically the other day my ipod crashed and now it wont turn on at all. I've plugged it into iTunes numerous times and it says it's in recovery mode, but when trying to restore the ipod to the original settings an 'unkown error 1601' occurs and then it starts over again.
I've tried different computers, different cables, updating everything, removing all other usb devices .............. so on

This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
