Q: 2 factor authentication avail in Canada?

Two weeks ago I started the process of using 2 factor authentication on my AppleID. Today I received an email saying that the waiting period is over and I can proceed. According to this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570 page I should see 2 factor authentication under Password and Security page. Well I do not see anything re 2 factor authentication. Apparently that happens when

" When your country is added, two-step verification will automatically appear in the Password and Security section of Manage My Apple ID when you sign in to My Apple ID"

In other words it appears that 2 factor authentication is not available to Canada.  Sigh if this is the case then why allow me to initiate the process and then email me to tell me its available when its not???

Big +1 here. The lack of 2fa in Canada is ridiculous. No other service I use has restricted 2fa from Canada.

I agree. Even much smaller companies are offering 2 factor on their accounts here in Canada. I guess Apple can not open their purse strings enough to get better protection for their non US account holders.

So I followed up with a call to Apple Support for iCloud Account Security. They read me the FAQ that I'm sure we're all familiar with.

Something interesting about this is that Canada is no longer mentioned in the article, as of January 6th apparently. In fact a few countries were removed (if memory serves, there were more announced than are currently listed, check the PR announcements I guess).

I pointed this out and they didn't have much to say. I was referred to a senior manager who told me the same things. I noted that this is worrisome for a customer who is concerned about account security and their data online. I asked what mechanisms there are available to escalate this issue and was told simply Apple.com feedback.

So, as of now, there are no plans to handle two step verification in Canada.

One thing you can try is switching your Apple ID to the US, logging back in and checking the security tab and see if the new settings show, then switch the country back. I don't know if that will work but it might be worth a shot.

Interesting that the spin that Apple puts on in the public vs what their behind the scenes response it. I personally tell everyone never to use a credit card in your Apple account. Either use an iTunes gift card or use no payment at all. After this information re 2 factor authentication I think that good advice.

Sorry to see that Apple does not place much importance on 2 factor authentication as smaller companies do.

Yeah, except somehow the UK and Ireland and Australia AND New Zealand all make the cut ahead of us.  Ridiculous...

Apparently this was announced again as being available here in Canada so I tried setting it up and the SMS code never showed up on my iPhone. Seems the cell carrier is blocking short SMS codes which, I assume Apple is using. Have no problems getting SMS codes from Google and others.

Thanks for the update! I tried it just now and apparently there's a 3 day waiting period for security reasons. I guess I'll see what happens in 3 days!

Thanks for the update, it worked!  I have two Apple IDs.  For the one I use for back to my mac, it suggests I come back in 3 days like arctophile above, but for another account I use only for the iTunes store, I was able to get an SMS code, and activate the two factor.

Well I tried two different phone numbers capable of receiving SMS messages and both failed to receive the code. I received no such notification of a 3 day period.

Well, I was able to successfully implement the 2 factor authentication. It just took a few minutes. Frozen999, I hope it works out for you eventually.

About to give up on getting 2 factor authentication working on my AppleID. No SMS code on either of two SMS enabled phone numbers. No error codes or other messages from Apple. Sigh,

Yeah, I've tried setting up 3 different SMS phones in Canada.  Virgin, Telus, and Rogers.  None received the SMS confirmation from Apple.

    Something's not right.

One of my phones is also with Rogers. A friend who had no problem setting it up their cellphone is on Rogers. Sigh. Deja Vu all over again.

    Success!

I replied on this thread a few months ago, and am still subscribed to it. So I received an e-mail the other day notifying me of the recent post from frozen999.  That induced me to try once again to get 2-factor enabled on my primary AppleID.

It worked! I was able to register two different cellphones (both on Fido) as my trusted devices. The enrollment SMS code arrived within about 15 seconds from clicking the Send button. Two-factor is now enabled on my account:-)

I then verified that it actually performs as intended. I tried to log in to my AppleID account. After entering my password, I was prompted to choose which of the two cellphones should receive the access code. After doing so, the SMS arrived in a few seconds.

Due to recent news of a possible security problem I again tried to set up 2 step authentication on my Apple account. Same result the SMS code never comes. What frustrates the crap out of me that neither Yahoo nor Microsoft has any problems SMS codes for their 2 factor authentication. Why does Apple seem to have so much problems with security issues? Most of the 2 factor that I use is via Google Authenticator but I am not going to hold my breath on that ever being implemented on Apple ID accounts.
