Aperture keeps quitting when trying to make a vault

I bought a 1 tb EHD to used solely for vaults for my referenced library. I daisy chained the 1 tb EHD to my 2 tb EHD that has all my images. I have tried to make a vault 3 times now and aperture keeps crashing. Very frustrated, any thoughts? Their is plenty of free space on my hd to be used for the transfer. And the daisy chained EHD has its own power source. Thanks

Thank you. I checked Finder and the EHD is Mac OS Extended ( journaled). So that looks good. When I check my activity monitor it say aperture is not responding in red text yet it also show aperture is using between 110 and 114. % CPU. And the both EHDs are clearly working. When I Hoover anywhere in aperture the beach ball just spins non stop ( so its seems non responsive ) Do I force quit or allow it to keep going? Also, as I watch the EHD in finder that I am trying to save the vault to,the "used" amount is ever so slowly increasing and the available is ever so slowly decreasing.

Should I hang in and let it keep going? Why is aperture saying not responding red text? Thx

When Aperture is processing it may occasionally appear to be unresponsive. While you are seeing an occasional processing, I would let it run.

How long has this been going on, and how big is your Aperture library?

A vault update may hang, if your Aperture library needs repairing, or if there is a corrupted image file or unsupported video in the Aperture library. In that case it would be better to fix your library first ( by repairing or rebuilding the vault) before creating a vault.

Ap library is 119 GB. It has been running now for about 6 hours. In past when I have successfully created vaults it has taken over 24 hours. I'm inclined to let it keep going as of now. A quick check of activity monitor and aperture appears to be running ( no red text saying not responding). Thank you. It a referenced library. When I began to create this vault the box popped up and said 2443 managed files would be included and 115,000 referenced files would not be included. This surprised me as I thought all of my images were referenced. So in efforts to locate these managed files I created a smart album of managed images and it produced an album with only 323 images. I then made a smart album of offline images and it produced an album with 357 images. Most of the 323 managed images are in the offline album. I tried to reconnect and them cannot, they do not even generate a thumbnail. I think something must have happened with theses 323 files somewhere along the line over the years. But I don't understand why aperture told me I had 2443 managed files and the smart album of managed files shows only 323 images.

That looks like your library needs repairing.

Do you know, if the original files are still there? Are they on the EHD where they are supposed to be, or are they indeed managed, and failed to relocate, when you moved your originals to the EHD?

I'm not sure, when I go to reconnect the images I see them listed in the top half of the screen but cannot find them in the lower half of the screen ( so as to match them and then hit reconnect all). I did not think to go into the EHD and look for them there. I assumed since I couldn't find them in the aperture project path they were gone. As I am currently creating the vault I cannot look now. I will check when this completes.

I think I may have found the problem. The original gdrive where all my images are stored in formatted Mac OS extended and the new gdrive mini is formatted for Mac OS Extended journaled. I can't figure out how to change the new mini from Mac OS Extended Journaled to Mac OS extended. Called over to Gdrive and they are stumped as well. Any thoughts? The folks at gdrive recommended returning the mini and getting a different EHD. Any recommendations?

That is ineteresting, but "Journaled" or not should not make a difference in this case. What could make a difference would be, if one of the drives were formatted case-sensitive-journaled and the other only journaled.

But both "Mac OS Extended" and "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" work well with Aperture. So you do not need to reformat.

Once you have your library backed up, repair your library with the First Aid Tools, as described here:

Your backup does not necessarily need to be a vault. The vault is essentially an Aperture library. YOu could simply drag and drop your Aperture library onto the external drive to have a backup.

If you even cannot copy the Aperture library to the drive, you will know for sure, that the library has a problem and needs repairing.
