Try VLC media player it seems to play anything.

May 31, 2013 7:36 AM in response to carolinamayoralnby Topher Kessler,Your Mac comes with QuickTime Player which can open a number of different video files, but if you get an error when trying to do so in this program, then download the media player VLC (http://www.videolan.org) and use that to open the media file.

May 31, 2013 2:12 PM in response to carolinamayoralnby rusputin,Hi,
I'm also trying to open an .avi file, an episode of smallville, but can't open it with VLC or Dvx, or mediaplayer, not sure what else to try. they are all like that, five seasons of smallville, and do not want to have to download them all again it's going to take me a long time and it's going to be costly, seeing that I'm in South Africa and here they haven't heard of fibre optic cables yet, or maybe they have but just so very slow in getting up to standard..
regards,
Peter
