I try to drag contacts into a group and nothing happens, no dragging, no dropping. How do I add people to a group.

I am scrupulously following the instructions for dragging contacts into a new group. THis should be really simple, but it just isn't working. I can't drag anything out of my address book. I have no idea what is going on.
