I have just added an additional user to Mountain Lion so that my wife can use my iMac but when we launch Launchpad on her account the search function doesn't work - typing has no effect and the apps don't change whereas it works fine on my account.
Any ideas?

Try highlighting all the applications in the Applications folder and dragging them to Launchpad.

Do you mean to drag them to the Launchpad icon on the dock?
I just added the Terminal command to reset Launchpad. Try that and if it doesn't work, then drag the applications to the Launchpad icon in the dock.
