How do I preserve 16:9 video aspect ratio in A3 slideshow?

I'd love to use video clips in my Aperture 3 slideshows but simply cannot abide the distortion of aspect ratios. I've looked through the manual and searched forum conversations but can't find how to keep my 16:9 HD videos looking good in the slideshow.

  • The clips view correctly within their projects and albums.
  • I've set the slideshow ratio to 16:9 for displaying with my HD projector.
  • I tried all the crop, border and inset options.

What am I missing?

Mystifying, isn't it?

I am also using the 'classic' theme, and have set each slide to 'fit in frame.' How do your previews in 'settings' look different? Do they lack the black borders on the sides?

If I had to guess, I'd say that something about the slideshow code reads my '.mov' files as 4:3 instead of 16:9, even though the regular screen interface reads the '.mov's' correctly.

I'm pretty new to this forum. Do Aperture engineers monitor these discussions?

BTW, I'm running version 3.4.4

My video formats that I tried: both work well in the slide show.

Yes, my videos are filling the screen left to right, with black bars at the top and bottom.

Not officially. This is a User-to-user forum. Sometimes posters reports that they have been contacted by the developers to provide test data for trouble shooting, when the developers wanted to reproduce the problem. But that does not happen often.

I'd try next to test, if the problem depends on your current Aperture library, or if a slideshow works well, when you create a new library.

The next question would be, if it is a system wide trouble or only happens in your current user account.

Thanks for your research!

I've just experimented a bit on my iMac at work. I use a different library there. I have the same issue.

I did try using some lower resolution 16:9 movies and had no trouble which makes me think the issue is related to Full HD clips.

BUT, maybe you or others will find that FHD clips work fine. I'd be curious to know.

Oh, and where did you pull up the codec metadata? I missed that looking through the custom metadata fields.
