OS X Messages negative unread number

I am noticing that occasionally the number of unread messages in Messages for OS X appears, for no apparent reason, a negative number result. What could be causing this?

I do some Internet research and I found that this bug has been discussed in some blogs since September of 2012, so, its not a new bug.

That's an interesting one (or should I say negative one 😀 ). I've used Messages for several hours every day, since it came out, and have never seen that! What kind of account do you have setup?

You could try deleting (with Messages quit) ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iChat and ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.iChat.savedstate, rebooting, and see if that helps. And/Or sign out/in of your currently setup accounts. I'm curious what causes this, though...

I notice you're looking at it in Launchpad. Does it also does this for the dock icon?

HI,

This Thread at the 8th May 2012 spot

It is not clear what causes it.

It does seem to be linked to occasions when the DOCK count starts at a + figure even when there are no new ones and then counts upwards until messages are Read but does not drop below the starting figure.

Computer restarts or PRAM resets seem to be the simplest "cures".

The Caches do seem to have a database of everyone you have chatted to (Although I have System Preferences > General Pane set to 20 - (this used to be for Documents separate from the others) - which in turn is the Number of item in the Recent Items list in Apps - so mine might have those listed as Video and Audio chats are listed separately from Text Chats.

com.apple.imagent.plist holds the info about whether your return a "read" receipt and might be a more likely candidate for storing the DOCK/Icon count.
