First, open  > About this Mac, and tell us what OS X version you have. You said you are using Mac OS X 10.5.8, but I just want to make sure that's the correct version.

I highly recommend you to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard As you have a MacBook Air, you have two possibilities to upgrade:

1. If you have another PC or Mac, use Remote Install > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2129?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

2. Buy an external optical drive and use it to upgrade.

After upgrading, open  > Software Update, and install 10.6.8. That's the most recent Snow Leopard version, so you can keep that version if you want. It's still supported and Apple provides security updates
