If you cannot get the key to work, then you may have an odd input layout enabled for your system. Try going to the Language & Text system preferences and click the Input Sources tab. In here, check the "On" box next to "Keyboard & Character Viewer" and then check the "Show Input menu in menu bar" checkbox. This will add a menu to your menu bar which will have an option called "Show Keyboard Viewer" in it.

Select this keyboard viewer, and you will see a layout on screen of your inputs. With this layout open, press the Shift key and you will see the alternate inputs from this action (ie, capitals, symbols, etc.). You can find other inputs by holding combinations of modifier keys, such as the Control, Command, and Option keys in addition to Shift.

Use this to see where the hash symbol is on your system.

If the keyboard layout is not what you expect or wish to have (ie, its for a language you do not use), then go back to the Language & Text system preferences and be sure your desired language is checked as being on from the list of languages. Then go back to the menu and ensure this lanaguage is checked as the one in use.
