Let's play a dozen questions to find out what you are using first.

knowing the graphic card and how and what adapter.

    hi

    thank you.

it is a radeon 3000 card (i think?). i put it in about a year ago.

and the adapter is a vga - i am chaning to a DP adatpter via thunderbolt hoping that this will change the resolution. would that work?

    thanks!

Nope. There was years ago an ATI 3870 in 2008?

There is no support for Thunderbolt on Mac Pro.

ATI 5770 is what you should start with and go from there, with a non-TB display (Apple still has 27" and if you bought this TB recently exchange it).

There are no Display-Specific Drivers in Mac OS X.

Instead, the Mac Uses a highly parameterized Driver that is customized to the capabilities of each display. The display must be capable of reporting BOTH its Name and its capabilities when queried by the System (the equivalent of "Detect Displays" button in the System Preferences).

VGA only very, very rarely supports high resolutions. This is a shortcoming of the display cards. Switch to a more modern interface for better resolution support, or to a more-capable Graphics card.

Displays wider than 1920 wide require special cabling to support that resolution using DVI.  Dual-Link DVI cables are required (but should be supplied with the display).

In addition to No ThunderBolt, you cannot convert from a graphics-card output TO DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort using any economical adapter. Look at DVI instead.

    hi

sorry: my mistake. i installed a 5770 card a year ago.

it is a 1 gig card. and it is a mini-display port.

so i am currently using a vga por but will try a DP port (from the samsung monitor) to mini-display port.

do you think that might help?

    thank you!
