Mac keeps freezing at desktop launch

I have a problem with my Mac mini whereby I am able to startup and launch the desktop on most occasions but if I attempt to do anything such as open a folder the colour wheel just keeps freezing. I am running OS X 10.6.8 and I have started disk utility from install disk and done the repairs and repai permissions and restarted in safe mode and the same thing happens.

I have tried downloading diskwarrior on to a USB with partitions from threads I have seen elsewhere and tried to run that from startup without luck.

I am not sure if there is anything else I can try? A hardware test did not pick up errors.

The repair permissions repaired an invalid file count but that seems to have no impact on function

Thanks.

Hello R, see how many of these you can answer...

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?

How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Thanks BDAqua

I will try these things and get back to you however is it possible to run activity monitor and console from the install disk/disk utility?

Obviously I can't run any programs when I get to the desktop screen, not even in safe mode and command option esc also does nothing. Is there a way to run them from the terminal maybe?

Thanks.

Yep I have decided to do that. I have backed up the disc to another hard drive, and now I wish to install mountain lion. I dont have the install discs for the mac mini for snow leopard (only have a friends one which is only compatible with mac pro not mac mini), and now I want to download mountain lion to install it.

However, it appears that you need a mac that you can access your itunes app store to download, this is difficult as I am wanting to do a clean install. Is there a way to download OSX on a pc to make the disc?

If you do not have your 10.6 Install Disc, you can get one from Apple.

Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...

General requirements

* Mac computer with an Intel processor

* 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)

* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

* DVD drive for installation

* Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

* Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
