How to Mirror ipad to apple tv?

I have a new ipad and new Apple TV box. I don't have an "AirPlay" button on my ipad and can't figure out how to get them mirrored.

About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

Thanks to the $15 Beamer, AirPlay streaming is still possible on Macs that do not support Airplay and mirroring.

Another solution is the Air Parrot.

Airplay missing icon - I saw this fix in another forum when someone upgraded their software and ended up loosing Airplay....sounded crazy but totally worked! My airplay icon is back, and working!!

On your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, navigate to Settings > General > International > Language and change to a different language (e.g. if you are using English, switch to French). The device will go through a language switch/reset process, and your AirPlay icon should be restored. Next navigate back to Settings > General > International > Language (translated into the new language, of course) and switch back to your original language.

I 've tried all of the above except taking my iPad to the store to have AirPlay reinstalled. None of the other routes works for me (iPad2, all other hardware and software up to date) . I had no problems until the second to last IOS update, and so I am wondering if some of us are just unlucky in having a hardware+software combination for which the problem simply defies solution, sceptical perhaps by going to the Apple Store?

Interestingly, for a high percentage of videos the air play icon pops up on the screen and I can project the video from the iPad to my TV screen via Apple TV. This suggests that my networking is okay, and my hardware is okay, and. that some code change inside the IOS upgrade has simply caused this function breakdown. Do I have this all wrong?
