Q: how to stop kernel panic

My 2010 MacBook Pro keeps kernel panicing. Open the laptop and 5-15 seconds later it crashes.  Sometimes only when I open an application will it panic.

On occasion, I shut it down (to try prevent the panic) only for it to actually restart, saying "your computer has restarted because of a problem"..... any ideas??

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hold the Shift Key down and boot the computer into Safe Mode, backup just your users files to a regular external drive (not only/or TimeMachine!) and then go around updating all your third party software

You need to restart, panic report assistance

Or do a #8  Reinstall Just OS X and/or other fixes as needed

Tried everything. From repairing permissions and disk repair to (trying) to re-download Mountain lion.  4 attempts to re-download and kept having issues. Grrrrr. Kernels still happening so saved my user data to an external drive, and have reverted to 10.6.8 FULL re-install.  Figure I'll start from scratch and wait and see if they re-appear and upgrade back as time (and patience) allows.

    Cheers ds store and dominic23.

My local Apple service outlet fixed this problem for me - for A$39. The issue first begain to raise its head in mid 2013. I took it to a Genius Bar when I was interstate in October but they couldn't find a problem. When it got worse one week ago - restarting almost every time I changed screens - i found this thread, so thought I'd come back with the solution (for me) to the exact problem in the initial post, for a mid 2010 MBP15".

First time I went to the store they ran a diagnostic that showed a software error which I wasn't content with, so she looked further and decided it was an operating system problem. So she installed a new OS, and now, 3 days later, my MacBook is still running like new.

Now I did show her this thread and the 'known issue', and left the lappy with her for just an hour, so I am assuming that was all she did. But $39, yes please!

Turns out my logic board was on the way out. Further testing at the Genius Bar found the issue. Had the board replaced and all is well now.

    Thanks for all your inputs!!
