Can MacBook Pro DVD player (mountain lion OS X) play back on Apple TV - bought in 2012?

DVD player works well until I put on Air Play then I get a checker board of white and grey squares very frustrating - please assist.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)
