I set up my new imac the other day without migrating my apps and software such as photoshop and finalcut, i thought i could do this later on. Now i realise i will have to restore and migrate from the very beginning, is this correct? I have pressed 'cmd' and 'alt and 'r' but there has been no utility disk diaplayed. Am i missing something?
You don't have to do it. Just use Migration Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps to migrate files from your backup or another computer.
Migration Assistant will create a new account with your files, so go to > Log Out, and log in the new account

Try CMD+R. I'm a firm believer in using the Setup Assistant, which eliminates all conflicts with the new account that gets created when using the Migration Assistant. See Pondini's Setup New Mac guide for salient details.
You are right. However, I think it's better to try Migration Assistant. If you erase the drive, reinstall OS X and restore the backup, it will take a lot of time instead of Migration Assistant, that will take minutes. If Migration Assistant doesn't work, then try reinstalling OS X
IMO, resolving the issues between the two accounts takes more time.😉
