FCP7 - plays out of sync initially, then corrects

Hi there

I have FCP 7.0.3 on my imac running 10.8.3. I have 8gb of RAM.

When I play anything on the time line or in the viewer, initially it plays with video and audio about 1/4 of a sec out of sync. If I pause and play again it corrects itself. It is infuriating when trying to fine cut. I don't fully understand the reason why this could be. I had the same install used on my old MBP running 10.6.8 (I was only using 7.0.0 then), and there were no such problems.

Can anyone advise what might be causing this issue?

What are the properties of your source material and what are your sequence settings?

Where is your media stored?

Thanks for your reply Meg The Dog.

At the moment I am just using the standard training material that comes with the official FCP7 training manual. It is stored on my internal HD.

Audio is 48 KHz 16 Bit.

Video is mp2 in some lessons and pro-res in others.

when I open a video file directly into quicktime it plays fine. Any thoughts?

You should be using an external disk for your media. Placing it on the system disk forces the computer to access the disk for three things at once - the operating system, FCP-7 software, and serve up the media.

In FCP-7, set the timeline to Playback Video Quality - Dynamic and Playback Frame Rate - Dynamic.
