Q: Can SD memory cards be used with an I-Pad?

You can use the SD Card with the Camera Connection Kit to import photos and videos to iPad.

With the camera connection kit they can be used to copy photos and videos to the Photos app, they can't be used to copy other content to the iPad nor to copy anything off it.

SD and SDHC cards can be used easily, SDXC cards usually have to be reformatted and may lose some of their content when formatted differently.

Not directly, however I did recently get a mailing from a company with in the UK called MyMemory they do a range of storage devices, go to their website and do a search for iPad storage.

A small caveat:  I could not copy a photo to an SD card and have it read by my iPad mini, It only read the pics that were actually taken in my camera. Maybe someone else knows of a way to work around this. Otherwise will have to load pics through iTunes.

You need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card,with the photos underneath that directory, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them
