I've currently got about 1250 photos synced to the Photos app from my Mac. The jpeg versions on my Mac take about 2.1 gig, the versions on the iPad 1.2 gig.
Whether you would get a similar ratio is difficult to say. The jpeg versions on my Mac are a mixture of sizes, both in terms of dimensions (older ones being 1800 * 1200, newer being 3000 * 2000) and file sizes (250k to 6 meg).
It will also depend upon which iPad you have or are thinking of getting. The iPad 2 has a lower resolution screen, so it the synced photos will be smaller.
From http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314 :
- The iPod Photo Cache folder can be larger than the actual size of photos being synced.
- The size of the iPod Photo Cache may vary depending on the device being synced with. The higher resolution a device is, the larger the iPod Photo Cache will be.
- If you are syncing with multiple devices, your iPod Cache may contain multiple optimizations of the same images.
