How much space required for 12,000 jpg images?

Is there any experience about how much space is required for 12,000 jpg images, where the average image size is 6 MB - assuming that there is a compression algorithm used on the iPad.

How much space required by the photos partially depends on how you plan to copy them to your iPad and the app you are using to view them.

If you copy them directly from a camera they will be copied at their original size.

Some photo apps will also accept full sized photos.

But if you copy them to your iPad by syncing with iTunes on your computer the photos will be optimized for the iPad you are using. They will then be smaller files.

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.

I've currently got about 1250 photos synced to the Photos app from my Mac. The jpeg versions on my Mac take about 2.1 gig, the versions on the iPad 1.2 gig.

Whether you would get a similar ratio is difficult to say. The jpeg versions on my Mac are a mixture of sizes, both in terms of dimensions (older ones being 1800 * 1200, newer being 3000 * 2000) and file sizes (250k to 6 meg).

It will also depend upon which iPad you have or are thinking of getting. The iPad 2 has a lower resolution screen, so it the synced photos will be smaller.

From http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314 :

  • The iPod Photo Cache folder can be larger than the actual size of photos being synced.
  • The size of the iPod Photo Cache may vary depending on the device being synced with. The higher resolution a device is, the larger the iPod Photo Cache will be.
  • If you are syncing with multiple devices, your iPod Cache may contain multiple optimizations of the same images.
