Q: how to delete ghost contacts on iphone 4s

My daughter in law changed her phone number 3 times and the old numbers keep coming up so I end up texting to the wrong number.  How do I make all her past number delete?  I have updated her contact file, I re-created a contact file with the old number and deleted the contact but nothing so far has worked.
