mac os x unexpectedly quit going to sleep

Hello, running Mac OS X 10.5.8, the only recent software updates are installing new software for a NetGear Wireless router, and deleting a Cisco Clean Access Agent for a network I will no longer use, and the MotoCast App for Android phones.

The following is the error message I recieved:

Hello,

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

/private/var/run/StartupItems

/Library/StartupItems

/System/Library/StartupItems

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons

/Library/LaunchDaemons

Thank you so much! I rebooted in Safe Mode, ran the Disk Utility, which verified that everything was okay. I then restarted in regular mode, deleted the Cisco Clean Access and unchecked two startup items, and was able to go to sleep and wake up again in regular mode.

For my own edificiation: what does verifiying the disk when using Disk Utility do? And what are Launch Daemons?

Great news, thanks! 🙂

Verifying Disk doesn't do much, just tells you if you need to use Repair Disk or not.

what are Launch Daemons?

PS. unchecking Login items doesn't do anbything really, it's supposed to not show them in the Dock, but never worked, to actually remove a Login item, you have to highlight it & click the tiny minus icon below... but doesn't sound like they were the problem... likely the Cisco was. 🙂
