After avoiding iTunes 11 for a while, I recently decided to give it a go and am currently using 11.0.3

 

However, I am finding that after several days that it seems to work fine syncing with my iOS devices (iphone 5 and latest iPad), I will run into a problem where the devices are no longer recognized (no longer show up in the Devices menu after being there previously) or iTunes claims "back failed" when syncing (although it will sync apps and such despite the error message - just will not backup).

 

I found that the only solution is to reinstall iTunes and all works again - until the next time. This probably happens every few days, which is nonsense.
