G5 dual 2.3 displays zigzag messed screen on wake up

Hi Everybody,

My G5 dual 2.3 started to display more and more frequently bizarre zigzag abstract mess on wake up; any attempt to click just shift the patterns, and the only way to get the normal display back is to restart the PC. I have absolutely no idea what could be the cause... If anybody knows please shed some light as I am certainly interested to eradicate the issue.

Thanks for all replies.

As BDAqua says, it might be time to blow out the dust! It could also be a fried graphic card, yours should be an ATI 9600 128mb. Pull the card out and replace the thermal paste with Artic MX4. If the problem persists it may be time for a new card. There are lots on e-bay. An nVidia 6800gt 265mb is a good card, just make sure it is mac compatible or it is a PC card 'flashed' for mac.

Thanks to both of you for replies. I shall try to do tomorrow the suggested maintenance. Actually I got Temperature Monitor, and the various sensors data looks pretty steady (CPUs 51,2 - 53℃; graphics chip 54 - 55℃; memory controller 63 - 64℃.

There is another problem I forgot to mention: the machine started recently to wake up on it's own, often immediately after I put it to sleep. Do you think the cause might be related/ the same with the occasional bizarre display behaviour?

Finally managed to switch off the machine and open it up. There was little dust; and I followed you suggestion and dismantled the graphics card, cleaned and re-applied the thermal compound. Shall see how is going... I will be away next week, but afterwards will report; currently the card stabilised the temperature and is running 5 - 6℃ cooler ( 48 - 49℃ ).

Thank you very much indeed! I never came across this vital detail, that the graphics card is better to get cleaned and new compound applied (I used to use iMac G4 for years, but the similar procedure there on opening was a common knowledge)
