I am running Windows 8, so this may be a bit different than on your computer, but basically it should be the same procedure.

1. Search for an application that should be on your computer called Apple Software Update.

2. It should check for an update; let it do that.

3. Once it's finished, click Install Item(s). Mine says QuickTime but yours should say iTunes, or maybe also QuickTime.

4. Accept the Terms and Conditions. Then, it may ask for an administrator password, or for you to simply continue. Enter the password or click Continue and proceed. It should begin to install.

5. Let this continue and install the software. When done, you will get this message:

User uploaded file

Accept any other messages that appear. Then if all went fine, you will be taken out of the application.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

For how to restore:

iTunes: Restoring iOS software

To restore from backup see:

iOS: How to back up

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

You can redownload iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
