placing mbp near big speakers?

here's a question... right now i'm remodeling my basement, so i only have a temporary set up for my equipment. i needed something to place my studio monitors on, so i used an old set of pioneer speakers that are very tall... as tall as a normal computer desk, to place them on. i am not actually using these speakers to listen to, i am just using them to set my studio monitors on. the reason i need these huge speakers to use as stands for my studio monitors is because the computer desk i am using is very small, and can only fit my laptop. is this going to be bad for my laptop? i've heard some crap about magnets in speakers and how they can destroy your harddrive or whatever. i just need advice. the MBP isn't going to be like RIGHT NEXT to the huge speakers, but they're going to be fairly close.

is this going to damage my MBP?

please help !

speakers, whether they're on or off, will damage your hard drive if they're (speakers) not shielded.

they will also do weird things to standard CRT monitors.

i would avoid placing my laptop or computer near any magnetic objects.

if your studio monitors are LCD displays, i reckon that it's safe to put them on your large speakers. as for your laptop, that's a big nono.

hope i've helped!

Yeah, speakers tend to wreak havoc on computers, even if you can't see anything happening. The bigger the speakers, the bigger the magnets usually are, and the worse it usually is for the computer. Although the size of the magnetic field is different with each speaker, the general rule is to keep electronics at least four feet from unshielded speakers. Most speaker magnets are "always on", whether or not they're plugged in.

The MBP probably has more magnetic shielding than other computers to protect them from the internal magnet that holds the power cable on. Still, if you'd like your computer to last a while, best to keep it away from external magnetic fields.

A few specialized speakers have their own magnetic shielding, but it can eventually fail. A quick test of the distance for a particular speaker is to use an old unshielded CRT TV; when the magnets stop interfering with the screen colors, it's about one third out of the danger zone.
