when converting .doc file (written in word) to .rtf I lose header/footer and page numbers

When converting my manuscript from .doc and .docx to a .rtf file I lose header and page numbers. In TextEdit I cannot put header/page numbers back. The only solution I have read is to go to print and add it there, but I don't want to print. I want to send document electronically to my editor with header and page numbers intake-in a requested rtf format.

Am I not using the proper program? Do I need to download more software? Pages does not seem to get me any better results.
