Q: iPhone Springboard not working, iOS not loading properly

The last app I installed was a mini golf game by Zynga, which I've promptly uninstalled because I didn't like it.

Then my battery ran out, and I came home an hour later, and plugged the charger into my iPhone.

It turned on and went past the Apple logo, but then all I saw was a spinning loading thing that froze every three seconds, and each time it froze the iPhone vibrated again.

So I searched for these symptoms online, and found that this is a problem that people who have Jailbroken (sp?) their iPhones get.

For the record, I have not Jailbroken my iPhone, hence I'm really confused as to why this has happened.

So the recommended tips online were "Put it into Recovery Mode", which I did. (hold down the Home button and plug it into computer or charger)

The only options that came up were restore and reset, obviously.

The problem here is that I don't want to reset my iPhone because I have over 290 meaningful Notes, a lot of Contacts, Messages, etc etc, but I have no recent backups that I could go restore to without losing things.

So I unplugged it and switched it on normally and it went into the Ring of Death mode.

However, iTunes recognised it normally, although when I looked at the "Apps" tab, the iPhone wallpaper wasn't shown.

I couldn't make a backup, which would mean I could extract Notes and Contacts and stuff, because I have a passcode, and no way to input it.

So I decided to sync it and see what comes up.

I saw that "crash reports" came up so I investigated in the \Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\ folder, and found a bunch of crash reports.

Here's one that was titled "SpringBoard_2013-06-05-091811_Ninths-4S.crash"

Here's one that was titled "SpringBoard_2013-06-05-091242.crash"

I looked through them already, but I haven't found anything useful. They just list all the things that Springboard utilises when starting up.

However, on my search to find a solution I found the iPhone Configuration Utility, installed it, looked around for things and found the Console.

It was being updated with information, but all the things were essentially the same.

This is what the console said:

All that I've gathered from it is that the Springboard is encountering a bunch of errors, and it's being restarted for some reason.

Does it show anything that you can decipher to be helpful in fixing it? What does the throw call stack tell us?

Some people say that it's because an app is too big to load, so I've started uninstalled the biggest ones through iFunbox.

While they were uninstalling the spinning loading thing froze too, so I got hope each time it happened, but it didn't make a difference.

What should I do, community?
  • I'm not worried about uninstalling the rest of my apps because apps are just apps, I can just reinstall them, so I think that's what I'm going to try first.
  • Is it not actually about third party apps? Is this an error in iOS?
  • Will I be able to retreive my information after all?

Thanks for reading, I hope you can help!

You need to put the phone in DFU mode and restore it. If your Notes app was connected to an email address, the notes may be stored in your email account. Your contacts should be backed up to whatever contact management program you use.

Hello again readers, I found a solution to my problem of keeping Notes and Contacts called http://www.copytrans.net/, which bypasses the passcode somehow.

I'm still in the process of saving information from apps and deleting them, when I finish that I'll post back with results.

    Hooray, I've fixed it!

The naughty app in question was either InstaFood or Insultrip.

So, what have we learnt, dear readers?

If you haven't jalibroken your iPhone and you get the spinning circle of death, it means there's an app about that is causing a bunch of trouble.

So open up iFunbox or whatever and start deleting apps.

As soon as the app that is causing this error is uninstalled, your iPhone will load properly!

I hope I've helped anyone in the future who also wanted to keep their stuff!

(And a big "screw you" to the people with generic responses of "oh hurp durp, just reset the whole thing")
