Q: Ipad to be used abroad

I want to buy Ipad mini for my sister in Morocco. Do I need to buy one with Wifi or must be Wifi+ 3G or wifi + cellular? What is the difference between nano-sim and micro sim? Do I have to buy Ipad with retina? And how to unlock the ipad for international use? Thanks

If your sister wants to be able to use 3G or 4G directly on the iPad then she will need the 3G/4G (which is the same as cellular) version - the wifi-only models don't have the 3G/4G hardware within them and can't take sim cards. With the wifi-only iPad you could potentially use a mifi device or an iPhone as a mobile hotspot for it, otherwise it can only get online by connecting to a wifi network.

You don't have to buy the retina display version (which has a faster CPU, higher resolution screen, and higher resolution cameras), the iPad 2 is still sold by Apple.

The iPad Minis takes a nano-sim card (the same sized sim as the iPhone 5), the 'normal' sized iPads take micro-sims.

Thank you very much for your prompt answer. What about Ipad 2, does it also have wifi + cellular? If I want to use Ipad 2 abroad with the sim card carrier, does the same thing apply? Do Ipad 2 have sim card? When I want to buy an Ipad, do I need to inform apple store to unlock it? Thanks

iPads are not locked to cellular carriers.

However, the warranty policies have changed so that the warranty is now only valid in the courntry of origin.  If you buy an iPad in the US, it must be returned to the US for warranty service.  To do so it has to be sent to a person living in that country as Apple will not accept shipments from another country for service.
