I'm trying to connect my mid-2010 MacBook to my old firewire LaCie drive (2003?). My MacBook doesn't have a firewire port. LaCie tells me I can buy a firewire usb converter but provides no guidance on what kind. What kind of converter will work and do I also need a new cable?

You need a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapto r?fnode=51 and then the appropriate firewire cable from the adapter to your drive

Just Google USB ro Firewire cable, you'll get plenty of options. Your LaCie drive is more than likely a Firewire 400 drive so get a cable that's USB 2.0 to Firewire 400.
So I just need a new cable and not an adapter/converter? I will try it and let you know if it works.
Something along these lines that will connect to the usb port on your macbook and the just run a firewire cable to your drive
Sounds easy--that's what La Cie tried to tell me, but I have spent plenty of time looking and I don't think there is such a cable or a converter/adapter. I'm coming to the conclusion that the Firewire to USB connection is incompatible although no one seems to be saying this directly. I'm going to the genius bar later today to see if they can help. As it stands my old Firewire drive is about as useful as a brick.
I have this USB--firewire plug thingie on order but from what I can tell it won't work--how the **** do I connect it to my La Cie hard drive since the Firewire cables have male ends not female ends???
and the other end of your firewire cable plugs into your Lacie drive.
