How can I replace the fan in macbook pro

The fan in my macbook pro has been running loud, especially when watching a video (even short youtube clip). The bottom of my laptop gets hot very quick. If I close it while it's still on and then try to open it later, the screen will be black, like it's "asleep". It won't "wake-up" at all, not by touching trackpad, buttons, even the power button. The only thing I can do is unplug it and take the battery out.

Could the fan/overheating problem be linked to the screen blanking out?

Is replacing the fan a DIY project? If so, how difficult/risky is it?

The overheating may very well be linked to the display issues...and overheating of the graphics module is a major culprit.

Replacing the fan is not a DIY project...some have done so, but there is nothing inside Apple considers DIY except hard drive and ram upgrades. If you attempt anything else and need assistance Apple will not help.

It would be better to take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar or Auhorized Repair Service and let them test and replace as necessary.

Replacing the fan is pretty simple actually.

OtherWorld Computing has videos, tools and perhaps parts.

iFixit has parts, that's all I know.

Just make sure each screw goes back into the same exact spot it came out of and follow proper anti-static steps.

You might need to use a bit of glue to hold the cable plug in.

Also the cooling fins get massively clogged behind the fans, use a toothbroush to get most off and then blast through with a can of air, but don't wet or freeze anything.

Sometimes the machine is just too old or the heat damage has gone on too long and can't be reversed.

You can take it to Apple for a free evaluation before you open it up.
