unable to open movie using hdtv.xvid-fum.avi

i am unable to open movie off of flash drive . receive message that says. "the document Game of thrones.s03e08.hdtv.xvid-fum.avi can not be opend. a required codec isnt available"

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

You'd need a converter (if this is not a commercial app - if so, copyright and DRM issues may be at work); you can try MPEG Streamclip - see if your format is mentioned. Otherwise, you can try VLC (a free player that'll play most any format).
