Intermittent audio drop video freeze facetime?

Deteriorating facetime lately, with temporary frequent audio dropout, occasional video freeze, rare lost connection.

Using ipad3 ios6.1.3 wifi Adsl2+ in Australia connecting to ipad2 in Ireland. Used to work well last year, problems becoming more frequent.

Internet connection as good as ever.

Rumours are this is a generic Apple problem, worse with recent IOS versions.

I can find no advice on this in online Apple Support
