turn off auto reply in mail

We're trying to track down an auto-reply set up by a man who is now deceased. We're looking in the Mail App, but he's not got Rules set up that we can see, nor is it in his Signature files. Is there a way (maybe through Terminal?) to grep on a string from the message to find out where its stored?
